When the complex system of bones, joints, and muscles do not work in harmony, TMD results. TMD can be classified into 3 categories, which may occur individually or simultaneously:
- Myofascial Pain. The most common form of TMD, resulting in discomfort or pain in the connective tissue covering the muscles, and muscles that control jaw, neck and shoulder movement.
- Internal Derangements of Joints. The dislocation of the jaw, displacement of the joint disk, or injury to the condyle.
- Degenerative Joint Disease. Includes osteoarthritis of rheumatoid arthritis in the jaw joint.
